Niklo's Gold Eviath

A Thousand Burning Lamps Egg

The most obvious thing about this medium-sized egg is, inescapably, its shine. It glows from every angle, each glance yielding a new glare of brilliance, as if myriad crystals hang from golden wires among a thousand burning lamps, each filled with amber oil. Darker spots of burnt umber or warm shadow grays appear and disappear among the light, reflecting the black of the sands nearby, especially around the top of the shell. These mock-shadows create a sense of depth, suggesting a structure not solid, but made of many complex parts - like a chandelier, ready for glorious hanging.

Egg Inspiration: Inspired by the ostentatious crystal chandelier almost every older theatre has, either in the lobby or, in some ill-fated scenarios, in the auditorium itself.

Hatching Message: The crack at the top of the Thousand Burning Lamps Egg grows wider still, glimpses of color within not badly matched to the hue of the shell itself. One last shudder and that shell breaks apart, revealing a shining new hatchling, eyes whirling, head lifted in curious enchantment.

Enchanting Amber Gold

Part dazzling fantasy, part regal dignity, one thing to be said about this queen is that she puts on quite the show. With snout down-curved and prominent, from some angles it would seem her muzzle's too strong, but the bold features of the rest of her face would be unbalanced otherwise. Dark, heavy browridges arch imperial over ingenue eyes; pale blond headknobs sweep back toward a long and sinuous neck. Resplendent in clearest, pure amber gold, her hide varies most in its reflection of light, glossy over the haunches and back and matte in the shadows of underbelly and paws. She wears her wings like a luxuriant coat, spars arched and long, translucent sails finely stroked with varying shades of umbers and ochres like a feline's fur. Though slight of frame she possesses a grace of movement and musculature, sinewy and slender, not a pound of excess.

Final Size: 38.1

Dragon Inspiration: Eviath was inspired the title character of the film and stage musical _Evita_. The musical _Evita_ portrays Eva Peron (the second wife of Argentine President Juan Peron and the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952 -- www.wikipedia.org) as a charismatic, sometimes hard-hearted young woman who travels to Buenos Aires with hopes of a career in modeling and acting. Her special talent for improving her social position by associating with increasingly influential men brings her to the side of Juan Peron, who aspires to be Argentina's new (dictatorial) president. By mobilizing the lower class 'descamisados' (shirtless people) and the first women's political party of Argentina through her radio show and other speaking appearances, Eva ensures Peron's election. The musical lauds her charities while decrying the inequitable and sometimes ill-organized arrangements between Eva's foundation and the Argentine treasury; it also criticizes her politics (and her husband's). Nonetheless, when Eva Peron died at 33 she was an icon for the Argentine people (mostly the lower and low middle classes) and known around the world as the rainbow of Argentina.

Name: Eviath - From Evita, 'little Eva,' Argentina's (and the world's) nickname for actress, activist, politician, debutante and First Lady of Argentina Eva Peron.

Mindvoice: Oh, your Eviath's voice - it is her true beauty, and a true reflection of the strength of her spirit. A rich, melodious alto, her tone carries listeners with it, and is a mirror for her emotions. It's hard to resist the joyful soaring that announces her pleasure, and near impossible not to identify with the low, vibrato throb that accompanies her distress. Almost a palpable thing, the lilt and flow her of her voice matches the force of her personality, rising and dipping as though she's a practiced professional, to draw in listeners, to elicit emotion, to croon her point of view.

Internal Impression Message: A breeze wafts over your skin, but it is not the stagnant, oppressive air of the hatching cavern. No, this is a different feel, like the sweet breath of a buoyant day from a high precipice with all the world stretching below. The sand beneath your feet seems to sink away, draining from your awareness along with the rest of the cavern. Fabric rustles, light, smooth curtains that blow in that enchanted wind and obscure your vision, your senses. Silks and satins, fine linens of vibrant, festive colors, move around you, enveloping you, taking you away. << Niklo, >> A voice so rich and melodious that it sings your name. << I am Eviath. >> Those drapes of color part and the cavern comes back into focus as love rises in your chest. << I am yours and you are mine. Together. >>

External Impression Message: The Enchanting Amber Gold makes one more approach, regarding again the white-robed offerings provided for her selection. Her eyes whirl slowly, hunger plain in their rich burgundy hue, but she keeps calm: this one thing must be done first, above all else. One last glance-over and her head goes down at last, neck arching low to express obeisance and love for just one green-eyed, honey-skinned girl.

Temperament

Weyrling:

She knows already what she loves most in life: enchantment. Eviath loves all things glorious, mysterious and surprising. At first her constant searching for the fantastic may cause her to be a mischief-maker - a tramp, a tart, a tomboy (but ever feminine in her heart) - a ragamuffin lady. Oh, what trouble you and she can get into, Niklo; perhaps that's part of what Ista's baby queen sees in you: a playmate. Oh, she'll be there for you when things are hard, and she expects you there for her just the same. But the depth of your relationship, the rich benefits each of you can gain from the other - these things will probably take time to blossom, and there may be in the meantime moments of unmatched expectations and hurt feelings. She wants the world, Niklo, and she knows you can give it to her. But she does not know, fresh from the shell, how long it may take or how far you have to go before you get there.

She chafes so against weyrlinghood. Make no mistake - she wants to learn. But there are lessons in weyrlinghood that must be practiced again and again, and as quick to guess the game as your Eviath is, these lessons are the ones that bore her. And boredom is something to which she'll never be accustomed, and always strain against; it confines her more surely than any obligation or physical constraint could. When Eviath cries out for freedom, it's boredom she's railing against. Worst about this is that she will not, as so many dragons would, put your interests first and take pleasure from whatever lessons you might enjoy - oh no. If it's boring for her, she wants out of it, even if you find it fascinating.

Adult:

So what does *she* find fascinating? A few things, thankfully, will never bore her. First among them other people and dragons- not just because she's deeply interested in their personal dramas, but also because it's through people that one advances one's own interests. She wishes to succeed, and by a turn and a half in age she will clearly understand that her success relies on yours. Thus she'll support you, promote you, sing your praises high - and though you might lose a playmate as she changes, you'll gain other riches from her desire to elevate you.

You'll discover also in Eviath an animal of ambition. She has such a capacity for empathy; she really cares about the Istan people, four-limbed and six-limbed alike. But her desire to serve sometimes conflicts with her desire to serve *herself,* and striking a balance between the duties of a queen and the opportunity to chase her aspirations may be a challenge she leaves for *you* to handle. Never pompous or condescending, it's not precisely that she craves power - more that she craves the excitement that power can most easily provide.

And why shouldn't she? In due time Eviath could be the queen of charisma. There's a special place in her heart for her small sisters, the many greens; there's special places too for the weyrbred children like you and all the hardworking folk taken for granted every day. Often she wonders: what can she do for others? everyone deserves a little enchantment, don't they? << Oh, Niklo. That's what we have to do. We'll help them dream. They have to know that once in a while, dreams come true. >>

Flight:

When Eviath rises she's on tour, glorious as the rainbow. From a daylong sleep deep with dreams she awakens, her hide studded with blinding glow like her eggshell was so long ago. How she bloods is unpredictable - lightly, heavily, even not at all! - and so is how she flies. Don't put it past her to fool a chaser into thinking he can have her if he flies like *so* - just to have him tangle up with another of her suitors and wipe them both out of the chase. Don't blame her! She just uses them a little bit, so she can climb ever higher past them.

After the flight, things may go downhill a bit. Her personality has the strength her body does not, and she may not bear up well in her last few days gravid, heavy with eggs, weary and miserable. The clutching is, for her, a relief. Too drained to fly away and get up to her old tricks, too stubborn to admit she's tired, the five heated weeks in which she is as a mother obliged to care for her eggs are just enough time that she'll be back in full form by the hatching.

Wing:

That support is unshakeable in one place, however – the place it’s most needed – flying formations. Some queens chafe at their place down below the fighting wings; Eviath is not one of those queens. She recognizes your position for what it is – the ideal location from which to cheer, to command, to inspire the pairs who fight above you. Her only downfall is her tendency to tire in a very long ‘fall; though she possesses stamina enough to last the whole fight in formation, her cheers become weary, her enthusiasm drained should the battle go on too long.

When she flies on her own time, or on business less serious than Threadfighting, she soars and spins, lazes and luxuriates in the eddies and currents of the delicious Istan air. Sunsets are her favorites; they blaze the ocean and sear the sky, and she knows already what a backdrop they make for the clarion purity of her hide, her wings, her style. And style she has – more than skill, more even than grace. It’s so important to present the right appearance, to lend oneself the best perspective. She flares her wings and embraces the wind, flying long arches like rainbows, dazzlingly high; and she loves to carry you with her, Niklo, because while the sky is her environment, it’s you she longs to elevate, to thrill.
