Wingleader Manual

IC Things a Wingleader Does:

  • Make wing reports to the Weyrleader, in person or by slate and chalk. They would include notes on sweeps, drills, health of wingmembers, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

  • Lead drills in formation as well as rope drills (with their wingseconds) (drills foster teamwork, provide routine, hone and develop new skills, and foster trust)

  • Develop new ideas for fighting fall, new formations, or new drills (which may or may not work)

  • Inspect the gear of his/her riders, inspect firestone and ensure adequate supplies are ready

  • Make determinations about who is and who is not ready to fly a particular rope drill or sweep, or who flies each tier or each position in the wing's various arrangements

  • Ride sweeps (check for unusual signs in one's area, help the locals, find a lost child, look for strange weather patterns, etc) Sweeps are often organized by the wingsecond, as the wiL might be busy with hidework.

  • Complete and assign watchriding duties (convey passengers around Pern, deliver secured messages, be a good example, greet visitors to the weyr)

  • Interact with other areas as a representative of the weyr

  • Handle grievances and incidents within the wing (unless they get big enough for the WL to step in)

  • Assign punishments to wingriders: dawn sweeps, taking weyrling dung between, cleaning ash pits, watchriding at an obscure isolated hold, etc.

  • Search for candidates!

  • Be a mentor to new weyrlings

  • Tap and train newly graduated weyrlings when given the go-ahead by Weyrleaders

OOC Things a Wingleader Does:

  • RP regularly and encourage activity in your wing

  • Hold an event every other month

    • This can be as big (weyr-wide rope drill) or as small (drinking at the bar) as you like.

    • Events can be solely prepared by you, or can be done in conjunction with your wingsecond, or with your wingmates, or with MBH, or ...the sky's the limit!

    • Find out when your wingmates are most active for optimal event attendance.

    • Advertise wing events! +mail Nolee to put them on the events calendar; bbpost about them, include them in the monthly newsletter, advertise in your status & your @doing, etc.

    • Learn more by reading the Event-Planning Guide.

  • Create a monthly newsletter

    • Include any ooc adverts such as wing event dates, the dates of other events or deadlines that your wingriders might be interested in.

    • Talk to the wingriders (via page or RP) and learn what their chars have been doing to add to the newsletter. Can be real doings or just gossip - make sure you check with the person before making up fake gossip about them.

    • Include pertinent +gossip (+help gossip)

    • Avoid talking more about your own character's gossip than that of your wingriders.

    • Pad the newsletter with any notable info about what the wing has been doing, trends of sweeps, outcomes of drills and the like as well as info about the wing's NPCs.

  • Maintain wing website at IstaWeyr.net

    • Should include archived newsletters and post rp logs, possibly details on wingriders.

    • List (see +help npc for more ideas) npcs that go with your wing and can be used by everyone; work them into rp, newsletters, drills.

  • Participate in the search cycle in any of the following ways:

    • Volunteer for the Search Co

    • Submit eggs

    • Be a searchrider

    • RP with candidates or run events that can involve them

    • Mentor new weyrlings

New Wingleaders should also...

  • Collaborate with the Weyrleaders to choose a wingsecond with whom you can work on events, newsletters, etc.

  • Include an introduction in your initial newsletter letting the wing know something about your leadership style, what they can ICly expect or know about off camera, your likes or dislikes, amounts bribes should come in...
    ex:
J'on is a harsh leader, criticizing everyone's least mistake, though he's exceedingly understanding if riders need a sick day or have to take care of fosterlings.
    or
B'ob is a permissive wingleader who loves daring stunts and late-afternoon drills, and is always good for a round of drink at the bar.
